Could Washing Your Hands be Dangerous to Your Health?

The FDA is taking a closer look at one of the main ingredients found in antibacterial soap. For years the effectiveness of antibacterial soap has been in question. And now researchers say that triclosan, a component found in antibacterial soap may be dangerous.

But it doesn't stop with soap. triclosan is also found in many cosmetics, toothpaste, dish liquid, clothing and even toys. In fact some countries in Europe have already banned the use of triclosan in a many products.

It's believed that triclosan gets into your body and creates antibodies that are immune to antibiotics. According to the Washington Post, triclosan is found in the urine of 75% of the population. The chemical was first used as surgical scrub for doctors.

Recently there has been a push for the U.S Government to reduce the use or ban the use of triclosan in many household products.

There are a few companies out there trying to make a difference. One of my favorites: Seventh Generation. I use their dish liquid, all-purpose cleaner and laundry detergent. Seventh Generation discloses all of their ingredients and they are a green/earth-friendly company.

I hope the FDA follows Europe to ban some of these harmful chemicals that are meant to make our lives easier.
